Understanding ASTM E1399 — Seismic Cycling Test
ASTM E1399 is the standard test method for cyclic movement of architectural joint systems — the primary US/international test for seismic expansion joints. The test cycles the joint assembly through opening, closing, and shear displacement movements thousands of times to simulate seismic events and long-term thermal cycling.
A compliant assembly must maintain its waterproofing, fire barrier (if applicable), and surface integrity throughout the test protocol. styleJOINT I-EJA and I-EJP are tested per ASTM E1399. The I-FIRE system is additionally tested under UL 2079 and ASTM E1966 for fire resistance in displaced positions.
UL 2079 — Fire-Rated Expansion Joint Requirements
In jurisdictions requiring rated fire compartmentation across movement joints (US IBC, NFPA 221, and equivalent national codes), only UL 2079-listed assemblies meet the code requirement. The UL 2079 test includes a hose stream test (simulating fire-fighting water impingement) in addition to the standard fire-resistance time test.
The styleJOINT I-FIRE system achieves 2, 3, and 4-hour fire resistance ratings per UL 2079, tested in open, closed, and shear-displaced positions. Installation must be by Stylewall-certified applicators to maintain the UL listing.
